School Issues

By:Patrick F. Kane

The 8/31 Reston Times reported on the use of school trailers. This is a subject I addressed with the Hunters Woods School Board Rep recommending that if trailers are used they are organized in cluster with restroom facilities, public spaces, and are safely connected to the main building. See paper on community spaces.

Another major school issue in Reston is the use of the word South Lakes as the name of the community’s only high school compared to Oakton and Herndon which are obviously located in those communities. I was advised by a resident of Fox Mill that his community is not interested in sending students to South Lakes because of its poor reputation. A grandchild will attend Oakton, preventing me from easily attending school events which she participates in due the difficulty of access with mass transit. She will be a cheerleader, and I am visually impaired. I have recommended the use of all of the major facilities in Reston as a component of the visual tours which are sales tools. Unless our high school has Reston in its name, it would be a difficult connection to make compared to the Reston YMCA and the Reston Hospital Center.

The funds to construct South Lakes High School, now undergoing repair and improvement consistent with its age, were part of a school bond issue which received significant support from Reston hoping to serve the needs of the Reston Families’ children; however, the school boundaries were established to send many Reston resident families’ children to Herndon High School. In my family, I have alumni from both schools. Kane convertibles have been used by both schools in their homecoming parades.
