Health Servive Personnel Outreach:

Multi-Cultural Festival & Housing

On May 30, 2006, I suffered an accident.  More information about the accident is available on request.  My recovery involved a month of attention from health facilities, Kaiser-Permanente, Reston and Falls Church offices, an imaging center, Reston hospital, Fairfax hospital, Cherrydale Rehab Center in Arlington County, and Cameron Glen in Reston.  The staff in all of these facilities included a number of foreign-born professionals from around the world.  In discussing their backgrounds, I asked many if they were aware of the multi-cultural festivals that occur around the area, such as the one in Reston.  This generated a lot of interest and requests for information on festival dates.  I advised many to look at the Reston Community Center webpage.  I also referred them to the Patrick F. Kane webpage for information.  The page serves as my mechanism to extend my relationship with the community.

I suggested that the RCC board take on an outreach program to the health service personnel in the area to promote the multi-cultural festival.  This opportunity was shared with Karen Cleveland, who has accepted a position on the RCC board.

I also requested input from my caregivers regarding their places of residence and proximity to their work sites.  Many exhibited interest in a broader range of housing choices close to where they work.  The staff responded positively to my suggestion that they organize into a support group for a broader range of housing choices.

I mentioned to the staff the potential for elevator-served high rise structures in the Park development across Reston parkway from the Town Center.  The structures would not be governed by the affordable housing unit criteria.  The health staff had a combined interest in multi-cultural promotion and the advancement of opportunities for a broader range of housing choices.

I have recommended the inclusion of health delivery facilities in the community’s virtual tour, which the Reston chamber has offered for several years.  This would demonstrate the value of supporting development in the community of Reston.  I will share this document with Tracey White, a Chamber of Commerce cohort who is joining Reston Hospital staff.

Since the Cherrydale Rehab Center was adjoining the Buckingham neighborhood where I carried out a revitalization study for Arlington County, I also shared these ideas with a county staff person in Arlington who will consider using my suggestions.
