| This webpage is dedicated anyone interested in expanding their understanding of patterns of Human Settlement to the quality of their life. Many people have asked me what they intend to do for a given issue, my response is that they are the they. Community Building occurs by people. |
The main postings include “Restonopoly” and “What Planners Should Know about Reston”. Improved community involvement could be the subject of a course to be offered at Reston’s Institution of Higher Learning including Marymount and Nova Universities. Consideration is being given to establishing a blog now considered an alternative to printed communication. Also, extracts from the study directed by Kane went to portray the future of Tyson’s Corner. This was the first publicly funded study that recommended extending effective mass transit from the urban core through Tyson’s and into the Dulles Corridor and beyond. Another posting proposes the rail will have a far broader impact on the region than any one of the stops in Tyson’s. |
My attention to the webpage began when my mobility was curtailed by life-changing events. Community evolved slowly and attention to Community needs should begin or should be a continuous process and suburban America is now reaching the age when reinvestment will be necessary because many community elements have reached their useful life. |
The information contained in this webpage has particular relevance to the Reston Dulles Corridor which has a substantive impact on the region. |

As noted in the webpage introduction, one of the reasons for this webpage is the current alternative to Mr. Kane’s work with students. He distributed several papers as background to the discussions. These include: a description of the 7-step planning process, and an essay on the appropriateness, or lack thereof, of single-family detached houses. Another paper offers the term Comprehensive Community Reinvestment as a more descriptive way to discuss redevelopment and urban renewal. This paper was prepared as part of a forum to the Fairfax County Community of 100. Therefore, these papers are posted on this webpage.
The other element of Mr. Kane’s classes included a discussion of current events and their relevance to the planning process. This webpage compiles several headlines relating to current issues followed by "Kane’s Perspectives" on these issues. The webpage also contains material relevant to the revitalization efforts being discussed for Reston’s Lake Anne Village Center, including a number of photos from successful reinvestment elsewhere in the country.
There are a large number of issues under discussion in this area. Unfortunately, many of the participants lack professional knowledge or lack a background to the subjects being discussed. This webpage will attempt to offer a vocabulary for stakeholders to use in public forms. |
Kane retains contact with a number of his former students who have indicated their interest in an electronic alumni group. He also continues to engage people concerned about their community and is interested in becoming involved. Connectivity has also been established with businesses that have established a stake in Reston who hopefully will participate. To this end, the webpage contains information on the evolution of Reston. Prior to web posting, papers are reviewed by a peer group. |
